Full Kitchen Rewire and Consumer Unit Upgrade

Project Spotlight: Full Kitchen Wiring & Consumer Unit Upgrade

Getting a new kitchen is one of the most exciting home improvements you can make. It is often the heart of the home, a space for cooking, socializing, and relaxing. We recently completed a comprehensive project that involved a full kitchen rewire and a complete consumer unit upgrade, ensuring this stunning modern space is as safe and powerful as it is beautiful.

This project, utilizing a high-spec, modern kitchen design, perfectly illustrates how integrating advanced electrical upgrades during renovation not only improves safety but also enables specific, complex features.

Why consider upgrading your electrics for a new kitchen?

Your consumer unit (sometimes called a fuse board) plays a critical role in keeping your electrics running safely and smoothly. Newer units offer much better protection and comply with current regulations. If your board is more than 20–25 years old, a renovation is the ideal time to have it inspected.

Modern high-end kitchens place significant demands on an older electrical system. For this project, a full upgrade was essential to support the following:

  • Dedicated Appliance Circuits: Modern double ovens, instant boiling water taps, coffee machines, and high-wattage induction hobs all require dedicated, high-draw circuits to prevent overload.

  • Integrated Multi-Zone Lighting: The stunning look in these photos is achieved through a combination of sleek recessed downlights, extensive under-cabinet LED strip lighting, and a unique warm-yellow linear coaming light integrated directly within the large skylight lantern.

  • Integrated Convenience: High-spec pop-up socket units provide seamless power for small appliances, USB charging, and kitchen island work.

  • Legal Compliance and Safety: Installing current RCBO protection (Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection) ensures individual circuits can trip safely in the event of a fault without plunging the whole house into darkness.

How long does the electrical work take?

Unlike a standalone consumer unit replacement, which typically takes 4 to 8 hours, a full kitchen rewire is a multi-stage process integrated with other trades. The exact time varies based on complexity, but a typical breakdown for a comprehensive project like this is:

Phase Timeline Key Activities
First Fix 2–3 Days Chasing walls, routing heavy cables for hobs/ovens, installing back boxes for sockets, switches, and the complex lighting circuits.
Consumer Unit Upgrade 4–8 Hours Power isolation, old fuse board removal, installation of the new, compliant board with RCBO protection.
Second Fix 1–2 Days Fitting stylish faceplates, connecting appliances, installing the multi-zone light fixtures, and final testing after plastering and cabinet fitting are complete.

In some cases, if faults are found during testing of existing wiring, the process can take longer, especially if additional remedial work is needed.

What happens during the installation?

A combined kitchen rewire and consumer unit upgrade is a meticulous process, far more detailed than simply swapping the unit and plugging things in. Our process ensures compliance and maximum safety:

  • Power is safely isolated throughout the property.

  • Old, redundant, or degraded wiring is completely stripped back and removed.

  • New, properly specified circuits are routed for powerful appliances, lighting, and socket outlets.

  • A new consumer unit is installed with dedicated RCBO protection for each circuit.

  • Each new circuit is tested rigorously before and after connection to ensure safe continuity.

  • We installed the necessary safety detection, such as the central ceiling smoke/heat detector.

  • A full Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued upon completion to confirm compliance with the latest wiring regulations.

After completion, you’ll have a much safer system, better protection from electrical faults, and complete peace of mind that your sophisticated kitchen is built on a reliable foundation.
